Our History
WAR's foundation was laid in a 1989 meeting of Women's Action Forum (WAF), one of the most prominent and active women’s advocacy group in Pakistan. WAF itself had stemmed from Shirkat Gah, found in 1975, by a group of women with a shared perspective on women’s rights and development.
What initially was a group of 15 women holding informal meetings to address the increasing incidence of sexual assault in the city of Karachi just after two years was a registered organization, having its own office, advocating the rights of survivors of rape and arranging largely pro bono legal help for survivors from lawyers cum rights activists. Over the years, WAR has provided legal assistances in hundreds of cases that include rape, gang-rape, attempted rape, incest and male rape (sodomy).
