Police Structure in Karachi

Each abbreviation stands for the following:
CCPO – Capital City Police Officer
PSO – Personnel Staff Officer
SSP – Senior Superintendent Police
DIG – Deputy Inspector General
SP – Superintendent Police

In every Police Station, you can find the following personnel:
• Senior Superintendent Police (SSP)
• Superintendent Police (SP)
• Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP)
• Supervisory Police Officer (SPO)
• Station House Officer (SHO)
• Superintendent Police (SP)
• Assistant Superintendent Police (ASI)
• Head Constable
• Constable
• Head Moharrar (Head Clerk)
• Moharrar (Clerk)

The Head Moharrar (Head Clerk) and Moharrar (Clerk) mainly do the clerical work which includes filling in the First Information Report (F.I.R.) and keeping a copy of the same. They are also responsible for all record keeping on cases registered under different counts at the same Police Station. The Head Moharrar (Head Clerk) or Moharrar (Clerk) file an F.I.R. under the supervision of a Duty Officer, who is essentially any officer above the rank of Head Constable, present at the Police Station at the time the case is being registered.

There are two ways to register a case with the Police:
1. Filling a ‘complaint’, or
2. Filling an F.I.R.

A ‘complaint’ is a temporary record of a dispute and does not necessarily translate into legal action. The Police do, however investigate the case and if the complaint is grievous to the extent of legal action, the Police or complainant can subsequently file an F.I.R. An F.I.R. has the power to lead to a formal investigation and the submission of the case in relevant court of law.
