Legal Awareness

When WAR first started out in 1989, it operated mainly as a pressure group. Being a brainchild of Women’s Action Forum (WAF) to combat injustices meted out to women in the form of rape and sexual harassment, WAR became (and remains) the only organization all over Pakistan dealing with the issues of rape other forms of sexual abuse specifically.
In the yesteryears, one could find WAR in the press with an outstanding regularity. One favored form of putting pressure on the government and those who abused authority to suppress women was putting items in the newspapers and elsewhere, to strongly protest against the rising trend of abuse of women. One of these abuses was in the form of the intolerably cruel Hudood Ordinances. Galvanizing the power of the press, WAR took on the task of religiously opposing the Ordinances with full force, a battle that is on going.

In the links below, one can find information on how WAR used the fettered press to wage a war against the most tragic laws ever to grace the statute of the Pakistan.

KARACHI: Naseema Labano’s ordeal began with her being raped but her decision to file an FIR and fight for justice has merely changed the nature of her suffering, not brought an end to it. The lack of support from the government and administration means that she and her family face a long fight that is both financially and emotionally crippling. Were it not for the aid of some non-governmental organisations and private individuals, they may already have given up any hopes of seeing justice. Read full story...

By Meera Jamal
Source: "Daily DAWN"
Date: October 25, 2007
KARACHI: The suffering of Kainat Soomro was only beginning when, on January 10 this year, four men of Jatoi clan raped her. Heinous as that crime was, no less atrocious was the attitude of police officers as she sought to register a case against her assailants and seek some semblance of justice. In the months since then, 13-year-old Soomro and her family have had opportunities to settle the case out of court but the courageous girl and her supportive family refuse to accept anything less than justice, which they hope the courts will dispense. Crime detection

KARACHI: There is need for a more enabling environment, in which the victim/survivor of sexual crime can feel comfortable, and able to voice her/his feelings.

A murder has been committed. The victim and his blood stained clothes present at the scene of crime, will provide clues to detect the criminal and the weapon. A six-year old boy’s pitiful little shalwar has been sent from the hospital for examination of semen stains. A sample of stomach wash for analysis has arrived from Badin; it’s from a woman who died by poisoning. What was the poison? Was it suicide or murder? Read full story...
Protection for women?
By Hilda Saeed
Source: "Daily DAWN"
Date: October 04, 2007
PAKISTANI women have taken giant leaps forward on the path to progress — of that, there is no doubt. Which makes it all the more reprehensible that the disturbing problem of violence and abuse of women persists, even after 60 years of nationhood.

Struggle against such violence has been ongoing: the promulgation of the Women’s Protection Act (WPA) 2006, was, therefore, welcomed by women and human rights activists with hope, but also caution. Many of us are familiar with the Islamisation process which was forced upon the nation from 1979 onwards with the introduction of the Hudood Ordinances, which prescribed barbaric punishments including public floggings and executions. Mercifully, the continued struggle against this gradually succeeded in lessening the worst impact of these laws.Read full story...
