Suffering
without an end

KARACHI:
Naseema Labano’s ordeal began with her being raped but
her decision to file an FIR and fight for justice has
merely changed the nature of her suffering, not brought
an end to it. The lack of support from the government
and administration means that she and her family face
a long fight that is both financially and emotionally
crippling. Were it not for the aid of some non-governmental
organisations and private individuals, they may already
have given up any hopes of seeing justice. Read

Officialdom
looks on as rape victim seeks justice
By Meera Jamal
Source: "Daily DAWN"
Date: October 25, 2007 |
KARACHI:
The suffering of Kainat Soomro was only beginning when,
on January 10 this year, four men of Jatoi clan raped
her. Heinous as that crime was, no less atrocious was
the attitude of police officers as she sought to register
a case against her assailants and seek some semblance
of justice. In the months since then, 13-year-old Soomro
and her family have had opportunities to settle the
case out of court but the courageous girl and her supportive
family refuse to accept anything less than justice,
which they hope the courts will dispense. Read

Crime
detection

KARACHI:
There is need for a more enabling environment, in which
the victim/survivor of sexual crime can feel comfortable,
and able to voice her/his feelings.
A murder has been committed. The victim and his blood
stained clothes present at the scene of crime, will
provide clues to detect the criminal and the weapon.
A six-year old boy’s pitiful little shalwar has been
sent from the hospital for examination of semen stains.
A sample of stomach wash for analysis has arrived from
Badin; it’s from a woman who died by poisoning. What
was the poison? Was it suicide or murder? Read

Protection
for women?
By Hilda Saeed
Source: "Daily DAWN"
Date: October 04, 2007 |
PAKISTANI women have taken giant leaps forward on the
path to progress — of that, there is no doubt. Which
makes it all the more reprehensible that the disturbing
problem of violence and abuse of women persists, even
after 60 years of nationhood.
Struggle against such violence has been ongoing: the
promulgation of the Women’s Protection Act (WPA) 2006,
was, therefore, welcomed by women and human rights activists
with hope, but also caution. Many of us are familiar
with the Islamisation process which was forced upon
the nation from 1979 onwards with the introduction of
the Hudood Ordinances, which prescribed barbaric punishments
including public floggings and executions. Mercifully,
the continued struggle against this gradually succeeded
in lessening the worst impact of these laws.Read

with a complaint, Daily Times has learnt.
Out of the 85 police stations, officers at only two
police stations outlined the correct procedure for action
for a case of domestic violence. The telephone lines
of the remaining 15 stations were either “temporarily
disconnected” or no one was available to answer the
phone. Read

Any chance four-year-old Sara had of a normal life was
stolen two years ago when her brother-in-law Kamran

little did I realise that I would stumble into what
could arguably be a major prostitution racket in Thatta.
I also had no idea that I would get a first-hand picture

KARACHI:
Only two rape cases were reported in Clifton between
January and April 2007 – one was in Gizri, while the
other was reported at the Boat Basin Police Station.
Some may see this as a decrease in the number of cases
of violence against women. A study of records from these
areas over the past couple of years shows, however,
that as a rule, fewer rapes are reported in this part
of the town than elsewhere in the city. Read
